With the nut and spacer fitted
Ciao Bella is a Hurley 20 bilge keel sailing yacht, she is my second 'proper' boat. having had some great times in a Fantasie 19 called Jelly Bean I decided it was time to increase my sailing range with a boat that could successfully bridge the gap between the huge fun of being able to explore every nook and cranny of a harbour or estuary and proper sea going ability. I hope this will be the case :~)
Wotz the spacer for Guv?
ReplyDeleteThree things Rog.. Spreads the load a bit, gives the nut a flat surface to run up to and also the the skeg is very close and would no allow the nut to spin up to the hull without grinding a bit out of it.
ReplyDeleteAre you intending to bed the spacr in with g/fibre paste or something similar to stop it moving? My H20 had a big thick top hat washer glassed and bolted to the hull, then more glass on the inside of the hull.
ReplyDeleteIt will be bedded in sikaflex, as will the top flange. It all needs to be able to move for the moment so that I can get the rudder stock back in without digging through the water main in my front garden :)
ReplyDeleteThe old tube, which was sound, is still in place. This tube is just a sleeve through to match the new smaller diameter rudder stock. Although smaller diameter it is solid stainless as opposed to the old thin walled tube.
If this was to replace the old tube then I think I'd have had the tube threaded top and bottom, made pads inside and out (Sikaflexed in place), locked it all in postion with the nuts (This would brace the deck and hull distance), used lots of thread lock and then glassed over the pads and nuts and around the tube.
Got it! I thought you were replacing the old rudder tube and couldn't figure out how the new arrangement would stay watertight.
